The Buddha Tooth Relic in Singapore- A Stunning House of Worship

This past March, after an amazing 5 hours of shopping, eating and site seeing in Singapore’s Chinatown, we randomly stumbled upon the most incredible Buddhist Temple we have ever visited. Having recently opened in 2002, this place isn’t exactly ancient, but the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum overwhelmed us with ornate gold and devoted spirituality.

It was like stumbling into something from ‘Indiana Jones’ and it’s without question one of the most incredible places of worship we’ve ever visited. Best of all admission is free and a visit here can also be a great reprieve from the year round heat in Singapore, or buying too many items in Chinatown!

Tripadvisor users rate the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum as one of the most worthwhile attractions in Singapore. And some attractions rated higher have clearly been voted up through dubious Tripadvisor accounts and fake reviews. The Buddha Tooth Relic is composed of 320 kg’s of gold built from the donations of devoted followers of Buddhism. It’s an absolutely jaw dropping site that becomes hair raising in combination with a Buddhist service that includes powerful chanting.

Mounted along the walls of the temple are thousands of little statues depicting Buddha in many forms. Some of the depictions look a little angry and intense. We spent quite awhile examining the amazing detail of many of these small relics as well. You’d need a very long time to closely inspect all of them and an hour long visit here is probably suffice. We’re also certainly pleased that they have no objections to visitors taking photographs!

    1. Haha, that’s a great point! I imagine they break the task down among several devoted Buddhists. Or one very unlucky one! 😉
